What are Lures?
Professional trappers have used special mixtures or ‘lures’ for many years to increase their efficiency of operation. These are usually made on a small scale according to secret recipes, and they frequently contain extracts of animal glands and urine, which makes the lures difficult to produce and unpleasant to handle.
What is FeralMone™
More recently, research on coyotes in the USA has identified a lure that can be synthesised from organic chemicals. ‘Synthetic Fermented Egg’ (‘SFE’) is one such agent. While this mixture can be reproducibly made, it is quite volatile, and has a smell that is quite unpleasant to humans but which causes dogs and foxes to show increased interest in bait and trap sites.
Pestat Ltd, with the support of Australian Wool Innovation, has developed a presentation of ‘SFE’ called FeralMone™ that is dispensed with an aerosol spray. This makes the attractant lure more convenient to use and to transport, while still retaining very high levels of attractiveness for foxes and wild dogs. Field testing by the NSW National Parks & wildlife Division has demonstrated its convenience for users, and has shown that it can be significantly increase uptake of baits by foxes and wild dogs.
