Book ~ Understanding Livestock Behavior

Temple Grandin
Understanding Livestock Behavior and Building Facilities for Healthier Animals
Learn how to improve the day-to-day operation as well as the profitability of your farm by raising healthier, more contented animals. Temple Grandin, North America’s most influential advocate of humane livestock treatment, shares dozens of methods and detailed plans she has developed for low-stress ways to move livestock on pastures, paddlocks, and feedlot pens. The benefits are great — for you and for your livestock. Well-treated animals, free from fear and pain:
• Injure themselves less frequently, keeping bruised meat to a minimum
• Stay healthier, reducing veterinary expenditures
• Remain calm in most circumstances, keeping human handlers safer
• Deliver higher yields of marketable meat
• Answer consumer demand for humanely raised meat
• Are an indispensable part of efficient, satisfying, ethically managed small farms

Humane Livestock Handling includes Grandin’s insightful explanations of how her general research into how animals think can be applied to improving any farmer’s understanding of livestock behavior and effectiveness in handling animals. The book includes complete construction plans that are applicable for facilities of every size and a wide range of needs, including:
• Handling systems for ranches
• Cattle corral systems
• Sheep and bison corrals
• Loading ramp details
• Fences and gates
• Latches

“If the animals on America’s factory farms got together to award an Animal Nobel Peace Prize, they would surely give it to Temple Grandin. Her combination of deep empathy and hard-headed engineering know-how will improve the lot of these animals.”
— Michael Pollan,
author of In Defense of Food

“Whether you have several livestock or several thousand, this book will repay the time spent reading it many times over.”
— Michael C. Appleby, PhD, Welfare Policy Adviser, The World Society for the Protection of Animals

“ . . . belongs in the reference case of every serious livestock production professional.”
— Joe Roybal, Editor, BEEF Magazine

“ Essential reading for handlers and managers of cattle and other grazing animals, and for anyone with a serious interest in farm animal welfare.”
— Bernard Rollin, PhD, Professor of Philosophy, Animal Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University; University Bioethicist

PROPERTIES: LIVAMOL Feed Optimiser Pellets have been specifically formulated to be used with Livamol, Australia’s Leading
Coat Conditioner, for addition to all types of cattle feeds including growing, breeding, stud, show and performance steers.
Flaveco is added for improved growth rates and increased feed conversion efficiency in calves and cattle, while improving digestion
of high fibre diets like hay and pasture. It has a wide safety margin with no toxicity problems as can occur with ionophores (like
monensin or lasalocid), is not absorbed into the blood stream, resulting in zero residues in meat and milk. In addition, it is non-toxic
for horses, dogs, poultry and other animal species.
Livamol Feed Optimiser Pellets have been formulated:
1- To make it easy for cattle owners to make up their own feeds.
2- For use with Livamol, Australia’s Leading Coat Conditioner.
3- To give cattle owners flexibility to customise feeds, for individual animals when necessary.

Protection against:
Pulpy Kidney
Black Disease
Tetanus
Blackleg
Malignant Oedema
in sheep, goats and cattle
Note Goats are very susceptible to enterotoxaemia and for this reason it is necessary to give a booster at 4 to 6 monthly intervals. Vaccinate previously unvaccinated bulls twice at intervals of 4 weeks minimum. Thereafter annual booster doses are required. Vaccinate previously unvaccinated cows at joining and booster 2 to 3 weeks prior to calving. This will protect calves for the first 8 to 10 weeks. Thereafter annual boosters 2 to 3 weeks prior to calving are required. Vaccinate calves at 2 months of age and give a booster dose at 4 weeks minimum. Thereafter annual booster doses are required. In high risk areas seasonal booster doses may be required. This applies particularly to enterotoxaemia and black disease prone areas.
Special Note A period of two weeks is required after the sensitising dose before animals acquire a level of protection. Maximum protection is not achieved until the second dose is administered.

Active Constituent(s):
Cl chauvoei ( - toxoid)
Cl novyi (type B - toxoid)

A note from Coopers regarding delivery & storage of this product.
"Coopers Animal Health stores all of its Clostridial vaccines in a refrigerated coolroom
at their warehouse. When vaccines are shipped from the Coopers warehouse to
customers, the vaccine it is not shipped via refrigerated transport and is packed in a
cardboard box without any ice bricks. It is recommended that the customer then
refrigerates (store between 2-8°C) the vaccine upon arrival.
Sometimes questions are asked from our customers as to whether this method of
transpoliation has any detrimental effect on the vaccines stability or potency. Records
on file show that Coopers clostridial vaccines have been held at temperatures of
37°C±2 °C for periods of up to II days and when retested, have been potent and have
met the required specification.
More recently stability work was conducted with an 8 strain Coopers clostridial
vaccine which demonstrated that temperature excursions up to 30°C for short time
periods (maximum I month) do not adversely affect the efficacy of the product.
On the basis of this data it can be extrapolated that the transport of vaccines for
shorter periods and at lower temperatures will have no adverse effect on the vaccine,
assuming these conditions are not exceeded."

Ultravac 7in1

5458
!

Ultravac® 7in1 vaccine is used to prevent Leptospirosis and the major clostridial diseases in cattle.
Approved Uses
Ultravac®7in1 is used for the routine immunisation of cattle for the prevention of:
enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney disease),
tetanus,
black disease,
malignant oedema (blackleg-like disease),
blackleg
leptospirosis in cattle.
For the prevention of urinary shedding of the named leptospires in cattle when used prior to natural exposure and to prevent the risk of human leptospiral infection associated with the shedding of the named leptospires in the urine and from the reproductive tract of cattle.
For the prevention of reproductive tract colonisation and placental and foetal infection with L. hardjo.
Key Features

• Global studies have indicated that Pfizer Animal Health's leptospirosis vaccines are equal to, if not the best in the world.

• Ultravac® 7in1 vaccine provides unique protection by preventing the shedding of leptospires L.hardjo and L.pomona in the urine and from the reproductive tract. This means that as well as the animal being protected from the productivity losses associated with leptospirosis, the vaccine also prevents the animal from contaminating the environment and placing unvaccinated cattle and people at risk.

• Ultravac® 7in1 can be used from 6 weeks of age. This ensures early protection after two initial doses, without the need for expensive additional doses of vaccine to provide effective year long protection. A single annual dose is all that is required to provide on-going annual protection, without the need for six-monthly booster doses. Additional doses of Ultravac® 5in1 may be required to maintain immunity to enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney). These are given prior to seasonal challenge and advice from your local veterinarian is recommended.
Dosage and Administration
250mL 100 doses
1st Dose 2nd Dose Booster
Calves 6 weeks 12 weeks Annually
Previously unvaccinated cattle From 6 weeks of age 4-6 weeks later Annually
When the risk of infection is high, the vaccination of calves can start from 4 weeks of age. However if the initial two doses are completed before 3 months of age then an additional dose should be given 6 months later, then annually.
Additional Information
• Store at 2°C to 8°C (Refrigerate. Do Not Freeze)
• It is important that the vaccine is kept properly mixed before and during use.
• For subcutaneous use only.
• Vaccine can be used for 30 days after opening providing correct storage instructions are followed.

Cattle Pregnancy Diagnostic Kit

1989
!

The Bovine Pregnancy Test is a break through in reproductive technology that allows for rapid and accurate determination of pregnancy status in cattle at 20+ days post mating. Simply collect a milk sample from your cows 20 days after mating and use this kit to determine if the cow is pregnant or open. This is much sooner that palpation or ultrasound pregnancy tests.

This test is ideally suited to farmers using AI programs where exact insemination dates are known. In cows that conceive, the pregnancy hormone is elevated at 20 days post insemination. In cows that are open, this pregnancy hormone drops to a low level at this time. The Bovine Pregnancy Test can detect high or low levels of the pregnancy hormone.

To perform the test, simply collect a sample of milk from the cow 20 days after insemination or mating. Mix the milk sample with test reagents and watch for a color change to indicate the pregnant or open status of the cow. It’s simple, fast and accurate and best of all, the test result can be known within the cow’s cycle, enabling better breeding management.

This new technology is only available through The Farmer’s Mailbox where we help you to improve your farming productivity.

How does Germ Solutions Work?

How does germ solutions work

Therapeutic Goods Australia (TGA No16) accredited Laboratory Testing has shown a Log >6 Reduction with a >99.9999% Reduction for E-coli over 14 days. (see test data). GERM SOLUTION nano-technology is currently being used by the Australian Defense Forces(ADF) in mess & field food preparation areas.

The nano-molecular structure of GERM SOLUTION works as mechanical devise and not a poison.

When applied it acts like a bed of nails that lysis or spear that physically ruptures the cellular membrane of the microbes. This is backed up by a positively charged nitrogen molecule in the molecular chain that electrocutes the microbe causing it to implode or explode. Because it is a mechanical device microbes can not mutate as they can with chemicals, thus delivering a dependable kill every time. Currently antibacterial agents are quickly exhausted and once an area has been recontacted it is immediately reinfected creating a self sufficient bioflim breeding ground. GERM SOLUTION does not permit this to happen as it is bonded to a surface and forms a patina of millions of nano-molecular swords that kills for up to 30 days. Therefore because this technique is mechanical and electrical there are no poison reside, leaching and prevents the mutation of "super bugs".
